About Deepavali (Diwali)

Deepavali, the festival of lights, falls in the Tamil month of Aippasi. In Tamil Nadu it is celebrated on Naraka Chaturdashi, remembering the day Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura. Families rise before dawn for an oil bath, wear new clothes, pray, share sweets and savouries, and light lamps and crackers. Many take Deepavali marundhu, a home-made digestive. Some families observe Kedara Gowri nombu or Lakshmi Kubera puja on the Amavasai that follows.
