About Tamil New Year (Puthandu)
Puthandu, the Tamil New Year, falls on the first day of Chithirai, when the Sun enters Mesha (Aries). Homes are cleaned and decorated with kolam, families visit the temple, and the meal often includes mango pachadi, which brings together sweet, sour and bitter tastes. A new name in the 60-year cycle begins with each Tamil year.
